FASHION SPOTLIGHT: The Lolita Trend

One good thing about travelling and growing up in different countries is that it enabled me to experience many different cultures that vary significantly from each other. This really aided in my being open-minded when it comes to certain things, including fashion.

When I was living in Thailand, I was exposed to a lot of styles and trends that many of you might find peculiar. The Thai fashion scene is very heavily influenced by other Asian countries like Korea and Japan. I remember it was such a culture shock for me when I first moved to Bangkok. I found it strange seeing people in shopping malls wearing Minnie Mouse headbands, French maid dresses, and other costume-y outfits. Of course, not everybody was like this, but a lot of the teen population were. However, after years of living in Thailand, I slowly became accustomed to it and now my style has also been influenced and shaped by them.

One popular look was the Lolita fashion. I'm sure you're all familiar with the term "lolita". It became popular after Vladimir Nabokov's famous novel of the same name, which basically refers to any prepubescent young girl who loves to seduce older men.

Of course, I do not condone that sort of behavior, but it's fun to dress up in Japanese lolita fashion from time to time (only when you're already in the appropriate age though).

The trend basically involves wearing incredibly youthful and feminine dresses, aiming for an innocent, wide-eyed look.

This trend appeals mostly to the Asian market, but it's also incredibly popular in Europe. Personally, I find it quite fascinating and I even went through that whole "doll-like" phase where I wore "big eyes" contact lenses, false lashes, and heavily applied blush every single day lol.

What do you  think of lolita fashions? I'm very curious to know!

  29. Lovely post! I'm not a big fan of lolita, it doesn't really matches my style. However, anyone who dares to dress like this deserves some respect, love it when people are just being themselves :)
